Suraj Deo Singh is the
biggest coal mafia in the history of India. He has turned a mineral rich area
like Dhanbad from coal belt to blood belt. His lust for power and glamor led to
the killing of innumerable people. Many films have been made on him. The don is
revered and hated by people even after his death.
Singh Mansion, the power
center of Dhanbad, was built by him. Few years back, it used to be the address
for anyone looking for any sort of help.
However, the power of Singh Mansion is
no more the same. The family feud after the demise of Suraj Deo Singh has
ruined its hegemony over the coal belt. The family members have become enemies.
Two prominent members – Rajiv Ranjan, the eldest son of Suraj Deo Singh and
Neeraj Singh have been killed.
Profile of Suraj Deo Singh
Surya Dev Singh was born
and brought up in Balia, Uttar Pradesh. He came from a very humble family. Lack
of job opportunity compelled him to go to Dhanbad. Many people from Balia were
working there as General Mazdoor. He also joined a coal mine as a labour.
Suraj Deo Singh was
ambitious. He was not content with a labour job. Somehow, he came in contact
with B. P. Sinha, the first coal mafia of Dhanbad.
Mr. Sinha asked him to
become a bouncer (Pahalwan). Those days bouncers were required to keep labours
in check. The Government regulation on private coal mines was close to zero. In
a short span of time, Suraj Deo Singh became a close confidante of B. P. Sinha.
But, he was ambitious. This ambition led
to the killing of B. P. Sinha by Suraj Deo Singh. Since then, there was no
looking back for him.
Suraj Deo Singh rose
into fame because of two factors. First his close friendship with
Chandrashekhar (the former Prime Minister of India and also a Rajput from
Balia) and second was Suraj Deo Singh decision to keep criminals of Wasseypur
in check.
In fact, he saved Hindus
of Dhanbad from the clutches of rogue Muslims of Wasseypur. The real life story
of Dhanbad is not same as has been shown in the film Gangs of Wasseypur.
Murder of Suraj Deo Singh
Suraj Deo Singh was
murdered by Suresh Singh, the Coal King of Dhanbad. Poison was mixed in his dinner.
Suresh Singh was later
killed by Shashi Singh, the nephew of Suraj Deo Singh.
