Gopal Rai: From Beacon of Hope to Corrupt Bhumihar

Gopal Rai is a founding member of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Riding on the historic wave of AAP in 2015 Delhi Assembly Election, he won from Babarpur constituency. It should be noted that in the last Assembly election, he was defeated by Naresh Gaur of the BJP.

Currently, Gopal Rai is a minister in Arvind Kejriwal cabinet holding four ministries. He had resigned from important Transport portfolio after corruption charges surfaced. In the 49 days government of Kejriwal, Transport ministry was under maverick and young Saurabh Bhardwaj.

Gopal Rai is also a member of the national executive and also the spokesperson of the party. It should be noted here that at the end of the Anna Movement, it was Gopal Rai who first proposed to Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan to take the battle against corruption with a new front – a political party. The then Congress Government had challenged these activists to start a new political party and fight corruption. Gopal Rai took this challenge and persuaded others to do so.

Gopal Rai, AAP Leader
Gopal Rai was born in Mau (near Varanasi, UP) on 2nd May, 1975. He did schooling from Mau and later joined Allahabad University for graduation. He started preparation for UPSC Civil Services Examination during those days. Destiny had something else for him. He was quite disturbed with the crime situation in UP. Later he took admission in the Lucknow University for MA in Sociology. He decided to took plunge into the student politics to thwart the attempt by criminals taking hold of the Lucknow University. The crime situation prevalent in this university can be observed in a Bollywood film named Hasil. He became a part of All India Student’s Association (AISA), the student wing of CPI-ML. His struggle to decriminalize Lucknow University is still fondly remembered. Even those who are against the ideology of Communists, see his struggle in high regard. He was soon chosen as the State General Secretary of AISA.

A Life Worth Appreciation

As I have mentioned above, Gopal Rai is known for his struggle against the criminalization of the university. In 1997, he went ahead with a fast unto death dharna. It goaded the then state government to launch a drive which led to the rustication of 14 criminals from the Lucknow University. The Vice Chancellor of the University was also removed.

Obviously, these events created many foes. Gopal Rai was shot at in 1999. Luckily, he survived. However, his spinal cord was badly hurt which made him immobile. There was a bullet in his neck. Doctors decide to not remove the bullet because that may lead to his death. For the next seven years, Gopal Rai remained immobile – on bed. He got treatment in Lucknow and then AIIMS. He became little bit better while getting treatment in Kerala (Ayurvedic Treatment). When he started to move (with help), he again launched struggle against corruption. Initially, it was limited to his village, then to his state UP and later to the national level. He had also parted ways with CPI-ML.

He became an integral part of India Against Corruption (IAC) movement.

As a matter of fact, when you see Gopal Rai, you must remember that a bullet remained in his neck throughout these years. Only recently, it could be removed through a surgical intervention.

Family of Gopal Rai

Gopal is married and his wife is a housemaker. He belongs to a family of freedom fighters. His father Vijay Shanker Rai is a well-known personality of Mau. He is staying in Delhi (Maujpur) along with wife. Other family members are staying in Mau.

Corruption

Gopal Rai is a big set back for AAP supporters. He was not only involved in corruption where he made crores of Rupees through Delhi Transport department, but his attitude was also quite shocking. After becoming the minister he had gone to his village in Mau with a caravan of 38 cars. Further, he resigned from Transport Ministry citing health reasons. But, at the same time, he decided to retain other ministries. Obviously, he just wants to quit the ministry after making huge sum of money for him and for party funds.
