Akun Sabharwal: Profile, Wife, Family, Education and Work

Akun Sabharwal is a 2001 batch Indian Police Service Officer (IPS) of Telangana cadre (he opted for Telangana post bifurcation). He is widely respected for his no nonsense policing approach throughout his career. His district postings are replete with stories about dare devilry attitude of police to crack cases as well as to control law and order situation.



Akun is also heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is spearheading the probe of heinous drug racket involving some of the most powerful personalities of Telgu Film industry (Tollywood). He was even got a threatening call. Many powerful people are already behind him. Ram Gopal Verma criticized him for trying to malign the Tollywood. But, the man is standing tall and going ahead with a conviction to reach the epicenter of ongoing drugs racket in Hyderabad and other areas.

Profile of Akun Sabharwal

Akun was born in Patiala on 4th December, 1976. His father was an officer with the Indian Air Force. Due to the nature of Air Force, Akun’s father used to be posted at different locations throughout India. That’s why Akun has got schooling education from different centers, but he remained with Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV). After completing schooling, Akun sat for Pre Medical Test. It was his childhood aim to become a doctor. Unfortunately, he couldn’t crack PMT. However, he got through Pre Dental Test and took admission in Patiala Dental College.

From the very first day, Akun was determined to not make a career as a Dentist. Rather, he thought about becoming an IPS officer. He appeared in the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2000 and cracked with flying colors. His all India Rank in the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination was 33. This rank was good enough for him to get IAS. However, he went ahead with his first choice that he had given in the Detailed Application Form for UPSC Mains – IPS. Naturally, he got IPS. 

Unfortunately, the prevailing rooster system didn’t allow him to get his home state, Punjab. He got Andhra Pradesh and joined the IPS.

Ever Since joining IPS, Akun has remained in news all for positive reason. His work in Anantnag and Vishakhapatnam was exceptional. His different approach to handle Maoist problem has become a sort of case study in various police training academy of India. Not only that, the way he managed law and order of Hyderabad during the Telangana State agitation is still being seen as one of the best approach to tackle mob.
Naturally, when drug racket involving Tollywood came to the fore, the Chief Minister of Telangana, KCR, formed an SIT headed by Akun.

The ongoing investigation of SIT has irked drug mafia. It is believed that the drug racket of Hyderabad has strong international connection. The threat call that Akun received was in African accent. The caller has even threatened Akun to take care of his two children.

Akun is married to Smita Sabharwal, who is an IAS officer. Smita has huge fan following on the social media – not only because of her mesmerizing beauty, but also because of her honesty and integrity. The couple has two children named Nanak and Bhuvin Sabharwal. In the context of the threat that Akun received, we are deleting the name of the school where these two children are studying.
