You are relying for Facebook
for everything social you do – from messaging to sharing your thoughts, images
and videos. It has virtually become a dining table where we are sitting around
and talking about various issues.
But, do you know that the
first female engineer hired by Facebook was an Indian. Yes, that is the fact.
Her name is Ruchi Sanghvi.
It is widely believed that
the main reason behind initial success of Facebook was its algorithm for News
Feed – what is there on your wall. In fact, this News Feed had dethroned Orkut
and My Space, among others social networking attempts. Even Google couldn’t
match the News Feed algorithm of Facebook with its most powerful attempt in the
world of Social Network/Media with Google Plus.
And, Ruchi was the team
leader that had written main codes of News Feed algorithm.
Later, she was transferred
from the Engineering Team to the Product Management job and handled tough tasks
of her pet project News Feed and Facebook Platform, among others.

Ruchi was born in Pune on
January 20, 1982. Her family runs a successful business in Pune. Ruchi was
planning to join her father’s business after completing studies. She went to
the US and took admission in Carnegie Mellon University from where she did

While doing engineering, she
came in contact with Aditya Agarwal. Both became close friends and started to
work with Facebook in 2005. Before that, Ruchi had also worked for few months

It took no time for Ruchi to
attract the attention of young Mark Zuckerberg, who gave her charge of writing
codes for News Feed. It was developed and announced by a blog post to the world
by none other than Ruchi in September, 2006. There were lots of discussions
about News Feed – positives and negatives. Some of the criticisms were related
to privacy issues, which were found to be true. Ruchi along with her team
worked for continuous 48 hours and solved all concerned. The new version of
News Feed was launched within one week and announced by Mark Zuckerberg. Rest
is history.
Sanghvi left Facebook in
2010 and one year later she launched Cove with Aditya Agarwal. Cove was a
stealth collaboration start up which was bought by Dropbox. After the deal,
Ruchi joined Dropbox as Vice President Operations.
She left Dropbox in 2013 and
since then working as an activist, investor and advisor. She is also a board
member of India’s PayTM.
